how come when somone joins smash bros wii on character select screen online,then i start match and they never join it like it drops them?? that, or nobody joins. this isnt cuz im on jap console is it??or do i need a patched smash bros? like the patched mario cart?

i'm on ntsc-u, and it worked, but I rarely find people. also, I'm pretty sure it's cross-region, but I'm not entirely sure
I have that same problem when i join to game mode "for fun" i play on glory mode and evrything is working fine.
