It doesnt have much lore,its more like a comedy so if u like that u r going to enjoy the movie, a lot more if u recognise the references
i think for what the movie is its funny and enjoyable for all ages. you just have to go into it knowing what to expect— its not some grand story-driven art piece its a live action kid's movie starring jack black as steve and it fully embraces what it is
