It's moments like these, especially with all these amazing things the homebrew community has done, that make me wish that I had a Wii U still. (and that used ones weren't so pricey!)

pricey? What are you talking about? You can EASILY find a used Wii U for around 50$. Up to 100$ with multiple remotes included and/or games. I'm not saying that's cheap but for what you are getting (a whole console you can play any game for free on) it's really not that much.
