if you want speed a 2.5 sata SSD is the fastest you need. the downside you need to buy a USB 3.0 4-way switch that allows external power. the NVMEs i've tested are fast the wii u can't handle the data throughput. thats where your problem likely stems from. hope it helps you over

a clucky old hard drive anyday. fun fact mine is a 500gb seagate ssd off the shelf but it to needs an extenal power source.

i use an USB flashdrive of 128gb. Temporary maybe, the speed of writing is a lil bit bad, i suggest an hdd. Possibly an ssd.

it saves about a minute in load times on lego city undercover. those load times specifically take 3 min on average.

a standard hdd also works if you can nab a reliable y-cable splitter (although probably not recommended)

I just use a 32gb usb stick, works great though!
