Don't waste time painting all of your spawn at the start. Instead cover the odd side areas and corners on your way to the middle to establish control, and leave the big open spots for your teammates to get their specials ready after respawning.

Also talk to the cat outside the lobby, he will give you lots of basic gameplay tips.
