Reminder: You can plug in a USB keyboard into a Wii U, and anytime the on-screen keyboard appears, you will be able to type with it instead! Case in point, it took me less than a minute to type this.

Sadly you can't use Bluetooth keybaords for this, so you can't have a small secondary one you can conveniently connect whenever and wherever. So, I recommend getting a keyboard with a removable cord, enabling easy hotswapping without even having to get another keyboard.
