i had an epiphany So, the term 'Shut Up' is to rudely say to someone to be quiet or to not speak. But a teacher says to a class quiet 'down' and lets say, if a TV is too loud, you 'lower' the volume. So shouldent the term be 'Shut Down' not 'Shut Up'?

Hmm.. But the term 'Shut down' is used for machinery.. so if so we have used 'Shut Down' instead of 'Shut Up' wouldn't that dehumanize others? and telling them to 'Power Off'?

huh well 'Shut Lower' doesnt exactly sound correct.. what about 'Shut Volume' ?
in the proper sanario, we wont be telling people to 'power off we will be telling them to not talk or talk quietly / talk in a low voice. i wouldnt just tell someone randomly. it would be in the right sanario.
"shut it" might be better..though it should be one that applys only to people & their words/volume so that way there is no confusion or dehumanization ..i guess "be quiet" works well enough? tbh i had no clue this was gonna start a debate :/
