im thinking abt putting pretendo on my 3ds, but i hacked it a couple years ago (with luma iirc). will i have to put in a bunch of work to update stuff, like i did with the wii u?

Not really its rly simple
Update Luma before doing a system update so it still works. You can also update any old apps with Universal Updater app.
Update. You'll need it.
