The Discord says this error happens when the server is overloaded, so you've likely just been getting unlucky :P

What I do is i delete my shared data and re-open splatoon or you can reebot you wii u and then go straight into oyour friends list. If neither of them work, you will probs have to wait for a bit (maybe an hour or two.) If its late tho I would try again in the morning.
