...real life—when we heard a knock at the door. We cowered there, locking it, holding it shut, as the knocking grew faster and louder, until the Witch overpowered us. She grabbed me and took me outside. (continued)

I heard a car pass leisurely on the street to my left. As I opened my eyes to the warm, wet dark under the small tree in our front yard, I saw that the Witch had changed my body in all the ways I had been wishing for. (I'm trans.) (continued)

She was holding me off the ground in a protective embrace, the way a loving parent might do to their child. I stayed still for a moment, stunned, then the Witch spoke: "Of course." (People in my dreams aren't very verbose.) (continued)

After a moment more of more-stunned silence, I wrapped my arms around her, hugging her back in accordance with the warm emotion I felt forming in my chest. I thanked her. (continued)

I worried for my mother, for she must have been worried sick herself, and for how she would react when she saw what I'd become, but above all I felt relieved, and I felt grateful to the Witch for what she had done. (continued)
