We need a media app for Wii U. I know the Wii Used a slightly modified DVD format, and with homebrew you can play DVDs. Yet, the Wii U does not have that. I'm not sure if blu-ray is possible, but playing DVDs should be possible. Someone get on this!

unfortunately, this is not possible, dvds were a scraped feature on the wii, and, unfortunately, they patched the disc readers from later wii's, so that they could not recognize dvd's, that also counts for the wii u, so there is no way unless you changed the disc drive from it.
also, the wii u disc format is literary a modified blue ray, and as of my knowledge, there is nothing stopping you from enabling this on the software.
