This means there are no players online. Mariokart 8 community is unfortunately pretty much dead. Most of them switched to Mariokart 8 Deluxe. If you want, we could play together though...

you can see or check how many active rooms and players are in this website mario-kart-8.pretendo.network it should show what rooms and what DLC type were created on.
