Fun fact: Tomodachi Life has a prequal on the DS called Tomodachi Collection. It's Japanese only, but English fixes exist. (I have more in the replies.)

Most of the quirky parts of tomodachi collection comes from Yoshio Sakamoto who created the quirky things outside hours after the required coding. The big N just went with it and added the things in till it became Tomodachi Collection and Life later on.
