I joined a online turf war (regular battle), but somehow some dumb idiot turned it into splat zones (which is sometimes on ranked battles), what the heck.

Same! i joined a tower control match right after the modes changed, and it was splatzones. Though i do love splat zones, so no complaints from me.
This can happen sometimes. Its because the host of the lobby didn't have updated rotation. Therefore the lobby is stuck on that game mode until the lobby dies or rotation updates.
