i might have a bootleg copy of Platinum, though after 4+ years it still works. My leading theory is the shell is fake but the cartridge is authentic.

Reproduction cartridges are not necessarily unreliable. They are basically as good as the originals, now, and they have been for years. With Pokemon especially, I think it just makes sense to buy reproductions because the original copies are ridiculously overpriced.
