Man, Would be so cool if the DS Virtual Console let you use real DS consoles on the multiplayer. They did DS to Wii connection on things like WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase, Jam with the Band channel and the Nintendo Channel for DS game demos, so I guess it could work here.
