I decided to make an RTS game for the SNES over the weekend in C, it was harder than I expected because you have to simulate alot of sprites and collisions at once on a 3.something MHZ cpu.

You should have done it in assembly. i worked with asm on the gameboy already and it's not that hard one you get used to it, i think it would be the same for the SNES

I actually did some parts in assembly, I think it may be down to the clock speed and my limited experience with programming the SNES.
