also the wii u doesnt output enough energy to power an hdd, but it does output enough for an ssd. for both you need a sata to usb adapter, but for an hdd you need a y splitter/cable. for ssd (maybe for 2.5" sata hdd, but dont quote me on that), a regular sata to usb is fine
if you plan to also mod your vWii, be sure to use the top usb port on the back of the console for vWii (usb loader gx / wiiflow). you can use the bottom port on the back for wii u games. i havent tested, but maybe the front ports also work for wii u software (not wii software)
lastly, ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP OF YOUR NAND. basically, it is a backup of your operating system. every wii u is encrypted, so every system is different. keep it in a safe place, if you can, on another device, even on the cloud if possible. better safe than sorry.
