An "animal crossing" is a real thing. Iirc it's a crossing for wildlife such as deer. As for what significance this has in a game which only had a proper car road in City Folk, who knows? Ig Nintendo figured "Animal Forest" (it's japanese name) wouldn't catch on so they renamed.

The name is confusing though because when I was little I thought it would be a game about helping animals cross the road lmao
