Wii used a tv channel + remote + motion control basis in order to appeal to everyone. Wii U used a clunky drawing tablet thats troubling switching from to tv or god forbid any other controller. Not only that but the gamepad screen always stays on even in TV mode.

you can still use wii stuff on wii u. and the gamepad can be turned off via: Home > Controller Settings > Display Off

you can boot to the wii menu and play wii games on wii u too

When it launched I thought it was possible to take the Gamepad on the go, like ps3/vita remote play (had a friend who owned both a vita and ps3)
