i really love S3, but its super grindy and very competitive than casual. S2 Was fun but became very competitive as time went on. S1 had that mix of competitive and casual which brought more people together.

more people were involved with the game but i want to thank miiverse for that. both S2 & S3 are twitter based communities which doesn't help players get together when its on a platform for a whole different device and not alot of people like twitter.

probably splatoon 2, its less grindy then splat 3, and has more content then splat 1, although i love splat 1, i played splat 2 from the very beginning, have alot of fond memories with both splat 1 and 2.
