So, I heard from someone that you could play online with "randoms," but every attempt I make to connect online says I need friends... Am I missing something, or was "randoms" referring to putting in random friend codes or smth?

i could be wromg but it sounds like they were referring to club tortimer, where you can play with non-friends on a randomly assigned island. you can unlock it by spending 50 medals on the form at tortimer's island
